Quando Lynch contratou Dennis



"Não importa quão maravilhoso seja um actor; quando se está a fazer um casting, tem de se escolher a pessoa que casa com aquele papel, que consegue fazer aquele papel. Para o papel de Frank Booth, protagonista de 'Veludo Azul', sempre pensei em Dennis Hopper, mas toda a gente dizia: 'Não, não podes trabalhar com o Dennis. Ele está mesmo em má forma e só te causará problemas'. Mas eu continuei a insistir.
Até que um dia, o agente de Dennis Hopper me telefonou e disse que o Dennis estava sóbrio e já tinha feito outro filme e que eu podia falar com aquele realizador para o confirmar. Depois, o Dennis telefonou e assegurou-me: 'Eu tenho de fazer o papel de Frank porque eu sou o Frank'. Isso entusiasmou-me e assustou-me."

«I’m thankful to Dennis, because up until the last minute it was gonna be helium — to make the difference between ‘Daddy’ and the baby that much more. But I didn’t want it to be funny. So helium went out the window and became just a gas. Then, in the first rehearsal, Dennis said, ‘David, I know what’s in these different canisters.’ And I said, ‘Thank God, Dennis, that you know that!’ And he named all the gases.»
